Chinese New Year Shopping… Again

This morning, after sending my car for a wash, hubs and I went to do our CNY shopping at a nearby mini mart. I love shopping at this mini mart as it carries a wide variety of fresh produce, organic food stuff and Japanese food stuff. Prices  are reasonable and the fresh produce as well as dairy products are fresh.

Here’s part of our loot in the car – total of 9 boxes of ‘gold’ (Mandarin oranges)

Pre CNY1

Part of our loot at the check-out counter…

The oranges in the rectangular box are from Japan and they are so joyfully sweet and juicy! The best that I’ve ever tasted thus far.  But a bit pricey at RM64.88 a box for 12 oranges.  Whatcha expect, flown in from Japan what. But it’s OK la, we only eat this once a year.

Pre CNY2

Mandarin oranges and fresh fruits galore. So many to choose from, I so wanted to buy all the fruits there!!  I LOVE fruits and can survive on a fruits, veggies, nuts and eggs diet. One day, I’ll turn into an ovo-lacto vegetarian (vegan who eats eggs and dairy products), yes I will! Lately, I am cutting down on meat quite a bit.

Pre CNY3

These pretty big apples printed with auspicious Chinese meanings caught my eyes and I bought some to be given away to the girls’ teachers.   They are sold at RM10 for two.

Pre CNY4

CNY is the best time to reap some quick big profits for shopping malls and supermarkets while it is the worst time for us consumers. Many of us are still recovering and reeling from the year-end celebrations and back-to-school expenses and now, money is flying out again inevitably! Hopefully the God of Prosperity will pay us a visit this year and reward us with a big bonus! I promise I’ll do good, lots of good deeds 😀

Sherilyn’s Bff

Sherilyn’s bff of 4 years came to our place yesterday. I think they are really inseparable. When I picked up Sherilyn from the enrichment centre yesterday, B told me that she wanted to tag along too. She wanted to follow Sherilyn to the ballet school and watch Sherilyn dance. I told her that she had to get her parents’ consent first. An hour later, B called me and asked if she could come to our place to swim and play.

So here they are, the 2 bffs having dinner together…

Sher's BFF1

After dinner, Sherilyn prepared ice-cream sundae with waffle and chocolate sticks and the two bffs polished off the bowl of sundae together.
Sher's BFF2

Later, the 2 bffs spent the rest of the night sending voice whatsapp to their other buddy on B’s mobile phone and then cycled at the lobby of our condo.

Sherilyn and B’s birthdays are just 1 day apart. B has repeatedly volunteered to help Sherilyn throw a birthday party at the pool-side of our condo but I am quite reluctant to have parties. A party is too time-consuming to organize and being the forever time-pressed mummy, I rather have a nice dinner at a nice restaurant and enjoy my food without having to move around to check on my daughter’s guests haha!

What A Friday Morning!

For the first time in my 2 daughters’ primary school life, I woke up late this morning.  Super duper late.  1.5 hours late to be exact! Darn the alarm on my new Samsung mobile phone. The alarm melody is super calming and pleasant, it must have lulled me back to dreamland.  What woke me up was this old man who swims at 6am every morning. His loud plunge into the pool jolted me up fr my sleep (can be heard very clearly from the 5th floor of our unit).

Gawd, with just 25 minutes to prepare the 2 older gals for school, I was like a headless hen, running around the house trying to accomplish everything that I would normally take 1.5 hours to finish.  The girls had no time to daydream a little on the dining table, no time to blow their nose, no time to complain and whine. They had to prepare their drinks themselves, quickly gulped it down, quickly pee and poo and do whatever that they had to do in under 20 minutes like speedy gonzales.   I had to skip jogging and gym today.  Thank God, we went down to the lobby just in the nick of time for the school van, phew *wipes sweat*

Resolution : One – must use my alarm clock as back-up.  Two – must buy another alarm clock to place in Alycia’s bedroom as triple back-up.

My brother and SIL from Singapore dropped by with my cutie-pie neice, Raelyne yesterday.  Alycia, Sherilyn and Cass doted on their little cousin, as if she was a newly bought doll. Cass misses Raelyne very much and could not help touching, tickling and cuddling her. When it was time to leave, Cass was really upset. Imagine if I had 1 more daughter, which makes my brood to 4 girls!   I cannot possibly imagine my life with 1 more baby to care for!! *shudders*

Oh yes, I found out today that the unusually chilly weather in certain parts of our country is caused by the snow-cold wind blown from China and Russia, plus a phenomenon called “Sleeping Sun”. The weather forecast for this Chinese New Year will be a chilly one, YAY!!!

Loving The Chilly Weather!

The weather in KL has been really very pleasant for the past one week.  It has been very chilly, just perfect to eat chillies!

It has been very breezy, very cooling and the sun would be hiding behind the clouds on most days. The temperature at the coolest time of the day is only between 20 – 21 degrees Celsius and the peak is only about 30 degrees Celsius. On days when I do not exercise, I do not even need to shower in the morning.  Even at home, Cass and Sherilyn would don on their jackets and cardigans on some very breezy and cooling days. Our unit on the 5th floor has always been pretty windy and it is even breezier than ever these days! 😀  During my pre-dawn morning jogs outside, it is so chilly that my hands and legs would turn really cold and stiff. As I am typing this post, my hands and feet are cold and it is 6:30pm now. The sun is no where to be seen today. This sun-hating lady loves it haha! It feels as though I am living in some cold country now.

Chinese New Year will be here in less than two weeks. This means we will have to say good-bye to the cooling weather and welcome the dreaded hot, humid and windless ‘Chinese New Year weather’! I am dreading the start of the hot days when temperature would spike up to 39 degrees Celsius. If only the chilly weather is here to stay for good. If only…

In this pic, Cass is enjoying her waffle with ice cream at a cafe at Plaza Damas. I can’t seem to remember the name of this cafe with an award-winning barista cum co-owner who whips up exceptional coffee complete with coffee art.  The next time we have coffee and waffles at this cafe again, I must remember to snap some pix of the award-winning coffee and get the name of the cafe! 😉

Geronimo Stilton Craze, Still

After all these years, after a collection of so many titles from many other authors, their first love is still the strongest. I wonder what is so captivating about the lives of a bunch of eccentric rats that make kids from all over the world go head over heels over them?!

Ger Stilton craze

Alycia and Sherilyn’s collection of novels and story books are enough for me to open a mini library for kids, I kid you not!

Is your kid a Geronimo Stilton fan-see too?

All Things Tutu

I have always loved tutus. I’ve always wanted a tutu dress when I was a kid but never had the opportunity to own one. Now that I have 3 girls, of which two are tutu lovers, I cannot be happier to buy them tutu dresses and tutu skirts. In Sherilyn and Cass’ wardrobe, they have at least 5 sets of tutu apparel each.

When I saw this kiosk that sells super cute tutus at Bangsar Shopping Centre yesterday, I knew I just had to buy one for Cass while she is still at the ‘wearable’ age for tutu skirts. I quickly got Cass to try on a few tutu skirts and tops and finally, after much difficulty deciding on which color to get for her (about half an hour trying and deciding!),  I  picked this set for her:

Cass princess tutu
I wanted the tutu skirt in bright green with pink ruffles but Cass who is a die-hard pink color fan, chose the light pink one.

Sherilyn wanted the tutu skirt in orange and black but the only size left was M and the length was up to her butt only! She said that she could wear it with a legging. And she only wanted to wear it during Halloween at her tuition centre’s Halloween party, so I said NO to her.  Well, had the tutu skirts been cheaper, I would have bought it for her though.  At RM90 for each tutu skirt, would you buy? I think 80% of the cost of the tutu skirt would go towards the rent of the kiosk, which stands at RM17,000 per month!  I know as I used to sell tutu skirts in my online store.  Well, anyway, there is no regret getting this tutu skirt as Cass loves it to bits and so do I 😀

This picture was taken yesterday at Jungle Gym @ Bangsar Shopping Centre.  The 2 sisters sending next to Cass are the daughters of my childhood friend.  We were at Jungle Gym to attend another ex-classmate’s daughter’s birthday party.

Best Way To Clean Up Raw Egg Spill

For the first time in my life, I accidentally dropped an egg onto the kitchen floor yesterday. I was rushing to prepare half-boiled eggs for my Miss Demanding and then at the slip of my hand, the darn egg slipped through my fingers and lay DOOMED on the floor!

If you handle raw eggs a great deal, you will know how difficult it is to pick up tiny cracked egg shells that’s dropped into the raw egg mixture. It is also a nightmare to have to clean up  slimy raw egg from hard surfaces such as the floor or countertop as the eggs just won’t soak into the kitchen paper, tissue paper or cloth at all. The raw egg will slip out of the material, creating an even bigger disaster.

As it was the first time I cleaned up the mess, I used toilet papers and newspapers and I had to use  a big stack of newspapers to clean up just 1 broken egg mess on the floor!!

After cleaning up and cursing like a foul-mouthed mother, I googled  ‘best way to clean up raw egg spill’ so that I won’t have to waste so much time cleaning up the next time this happens again.

So this is what I gathered and the magic ingredient is table salt!

STEPS:
1) Cover the cracked open egg with table salt.
2) Leave the salt until it is completely absorbed by the egg.
3) Brush the salted egg onto a newspaper. It will come off the floor or surface very easily.
4) Dispose of the egg. Take more care with your next egg!
5) Spray disinfectant on affected area. For me, I sprayed Sol-U-Guard disinfectant from Melaleuca

Raw eggs are a source of salmonella. After handling raw eggs, always wash your hands thoroughly with water and anti-bacterial soap. Dispose of broken shells and raw eggs in a sealed plastic bag away from children and pets. Wearing protective gloves is highly recommended.

Here are some pix copied from WikiHow on how to clean up spilled raw eggs:

Cass’ Reading Progress

Today while I was helping Cass to shower, she suddenly remembered something that transpired in kindy in the morning during English lesson.

Cass – mummy, do you know teacher A gave me a STAR and a “VERY GOOD” in my reading today!?

Me – really? *with face all perked up though I was almost going to doze off in the bathroom* LOL!

Cass – I can read the whole of Chapter 1.  Are you glad? *and gives me a cheeky and smug smile*

Me – yes of course! I am very glad! *I could not help but grin proudly*

Cass – last year I could not read, now I can read all the words.  Are you glad to hear this?

Me – yes of course. You see, practice makes perfect, so you have to read more ok?

Cass – Adam could not read, but I can read  the whole of Chapter 1 and 2.  Ethan can read very well too.

Me – you can beat Ethan  you know?  You just have to practise reading more. (Ethan is the top student in Cass’ class)

Cass – yes I know.

And then she went on and on telling me how well she could read these days.  And that was my moment of glory hehe…

Siew Siew Restaurant @ Sg Besi KL

Yesterday being a public holiday, the hubs told us that he wanted to try something new. So he brought us to Siew Siew Restaurant @ Sg Besi.  I was told that this restaurant has been around for quite some time already but I never realized that there is such a nice restaurant located just next to TUDM.  Upon entering the restaurant, we were all taken by surprise by how spacious the restaurant is with Balinese style gazebos outside the restaurant. The girls were so excited to see a really huge fish pond with huge and well-fed carps swimming everywhere in the pond.  We chose one of the private gazebos instead of sitting inside the restaurant, to enjoy the outdoor scenic view.

The girls ran everywhere round the zic-zac shape wooden bridge to look at the carps before the food arrived.

Siew Siew 1

We wanted to order the signature melt-in-the-mouth char siew dish but was told that it was only available at night *bummer*!  So we ordered the siew yoke instead, which was deep fried and tossed with lots of big onions.

Siew Siew 2

Inside the restaurant were some huge fish tanks with huge fish swimming around, with a waterfall at the backdrop.

Siew Siew 3

The stir-fried vermicelli with crabs was crabby flavorful. iLike it!

Siew Siew 4

Harm tarn hai (salted duck’s eggs crabs), steamed kampung chicken with kailan and a plate of stir-fried fish slice…

Siew Siew 5

Siew Siew 6

Overall, the food was OK.  I said OK as we bench-marked the crab dish against Unique Seafood Restaurant’s crab dishes, which we very much preferred. Also, the coconut juice was not fresh and cost us RM5 each!  I think we would still visit Siew Siew again, to try out other dishes, as the price of the food there is still cheaper than Unique Seafood Restaurant 🙂

Healthy & Yummy Tuna Sala / Bread Spread

The celebrity chef wannabe pleaded with me to let her make tuna salad for us last weekend.  I have been working at full steam for the past 2 weeks (pre-CNY orders are normally high), so I said OK but she has to handle everything herself.  What do I know? The girl spent about an hour in the wet kitchen peeling and chopping cucumbers, slicing cherry tomatoes and peeling and chopping onions (I was surprised that the onions did not make her tear, muahaha!)

After the girl was done with all the peeling and chopping, I helped her open the can of tuna.  Then I toasted some pumpkin seeds in the oven and heated up the tuna in the oven as well. Then added ground pepper, mayo and chia seeds and tossed everything together.  The salad was delish and tasted just like hotel ones 🙂

The girl then spread the tuna salad on bread to make sandwiches for everyone and that was our dinner last Sunday, after a heavy lunch.

Delish and healthy, yums!  Will definitely prepare this salad / bread spread again, if I have volunteers in the kitchen 😀

Boxes Of Goodies

Our once yearly treat to the world’s tastiest potato snacks arrived at our door step a few days ago. The MIL and SIL would visit Japan every year. If they visit Hokkaido, they will surely think of us and get us a box or two of Potato Farm Jaga Pokkuru premium potato chips and have them couriered back to us ASAP.  For someone like moi who cringe at the sight of those killer McD and KFC french fries (and all fast food french fries for that matter), I would somehow submit to Hokkaido’s Potato Farm’s potato chips.

Potato Farm’s chips look like petrified French fries. They also taste like them but are in concentrated form and very crispy. Each box has 10 packets of 18g chips and are slightly salted. Thank goodness the individual packets come in very small serving and contains only 108 calories (which I can easily jog away in the morning), else I can easily chomp away to a thousand calories when my tummy is growling with hunger or when I am stressed up. Yep, indulging in sinful snacks can help me to de-stress haha!

goodies1

In the 2 boxes of parcels couriered back to us were also packs and packs of our favorite Whittaker’s Almond Gold Chocolate — in all sizes of packaging, including the latest bite-size ones.  This time, she also sent us Whittaker’s Hazelnut Slab, which tastes just as good as almond and I have been devouring on them for the past 3 days.  Fei sei lor!!  MIL bought the Whittaker’s chocs from New Zealand.

goodies2

Meiji chocs, my all-time favorite Ferrero Rocher, Japanese chocs, Panettone Christmas bread, Japanese jellies (the girls’ favorite), Manuka honey and so much more goodies were in our 2 boxes of surprise.  I better not slacken in my exercise any further. During the 6-week long school holidays, I have chucked my daily exercise at the back-seat and shored up on some beauty sleep before the battle of school days begins again.  Now, I have to work out doubly hard!

goodies3

Here’s wishing my SIL no. 1 and SIL no. 3 a very big thank you for all the goodies from Japan, New Zealand and Hong Kong!  Also thank you to SIL no. 4 from Hawaii for the lovely handmade gifts for us 🙂

Awesome Food Panda Food Delivery Service

One of the things that I miss the most about having a live-in maid is not having to do any cooking. Lunch and dinner would be all settled by Dyah, our previous helper, whom I miss terribly when she first left us. All I needed to do was to write out a weekly menu on what to cook for lunch and dinner and Dyah would know what to do. For over 10 years, I hardly stepped into the wet kitchen. In the initial days when she just left to return to her homeland for good, I did not know where things were kept. I did not even know how to operate the washing machine.  It took me over 1.5 years to get used to living without Dyah. It was only recently when the MIL went overseas for several months that I really learned how to be independent – how to whip up meals for the kids everyday and how to juggle my time between doing house chores, cooking, taking care of the kids’ welfare and doing my online business.

One of the things that I find very time consuming is cooking. Preparation and cooking eats up at least an hour of my time daily. And this is with preparing only easy-to-cook dishes with minimal preparation, simple cooking procedures and requires minimal washing up. On days when I am too tied down with my online store, cooking will be the last thing I want to do. On such days, I will bring the kids to the Japanese restaurant at our condo to have dinner or drive out to the nearby shops to eat. On days when we are all fed-up of the choices that we have, we will have pizza or KFC delivered to our door-step.  Recently, my friend introduced me to Food Panda, a food delivery service. With this awesome service, I will now be spoilt for choice with a WIDE range to pick from, such as Tony Roma’s, Papa John’s, Secret Recipe, DOME, A&W, Sakae Sushi, The Chicken Rice Shop, Cha Time, among others! Delivery fee is just a few Ringgit and some outlets will stipulate a minimum order requirement.

Speaking about food, I now crave for some Japanese food! This Saturday, I am all gamed up to use Food Panda’s service to order food from one of our favorite eateries. I’ll bet my girls will be excited to pick their choice of food and eatery!

Update – By the way, I also came to know about this website recently named CouponzGuru.  At this website you can get latest coupon codes for online food ordering websites like Foodpanda & Room Service. You can now get  Foodpanda Coupons and Room Service Coupons at this site. Check it out!

Meal In A Jiffy – Braised Chicken Thigh

The first new dish that I cooked for 2014 is my own version of ‘loh kai pei’ (braised chicken thighs).  This is SO easy to prepare and the taste was top notch, according to my monsters 🙂

Here’s what I used, based on what I could find in my fridge.  The chicken need not be marinated.

INGREDIENTS (for 4 whole chicken thighs) :

1) Soy sauce.

2) 1 whole bulb of garlic

3)  Star Anise and some tiny dried twigs. I found this in a bottle that my MIL kept the Star Anise. I used about 4-5 tablespoons

4) About 1-2 tablespoons of oyster sauce

5) About 1-2 teaspoons of dark soy sauce

6) About 1-2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar (you can omit this if you do not like a tinge of sour and tarty taste)

7) Agave nectar – about 1/4 cup

8) Brown sugar – about 1 tablespoon

9) Filtered water

10) Black pepper – ground and unground

11) White pepper

12) About 1/2 cup of ginger wine.  I remember my MIL uses rose wine but I could not find it, thus I replaced it with ginger wine.

Loh Kai 7 Jan 2014

METHOD:

I did not use any measurement cup or spoon – as usual, everything was done in a rush as I had to get this dish done before I went out to fetch Alycia and Sherilyn back from the tuition centre.  Preparation time, including washing chicken and peeling garlic is about 40 minutes.  About half-way through simmering the chicken, I tasted the sauce. You can adjust the taste to your liking by adding more of whatever sauces or spices that you fancy or add water if it is a tad salty.  My sauce is mild in saltiness and sweetness – just right for kiddos 🙂

Add all the sauces into the pot of water, which was enough to cover the 4 chicken thighs.  When it boils, add in the chicken thighs.

Let the sauces simmer with the chicken thighs in high flame for about 20 minutes, then lower flame to medium and let it simmer for another 10 minutes.

While the chicken are simmering in the pot, I quickly did some work on the computer while enjoying the aromatic smell of 5 Star Anise and garlic mixed with soy sauce wafting in the house, which made my tummy growl 😀

After 30 minutes, I turned off the flame and went out to fetch Alycia and Sherilyn back from the tuition centre.

Remember the Chicken Adobo that I cooked the other day? My girls loved that to bits.  I asked them which they liked more – Chicken Adobo or mummy’s braised chicken and the answer was “BOTH also nice” and then they voted Mummy’s Braised Chicken first and Chicken Adobo second 😀

I have kept the remaining sauce in a pot in the fridge and am going to make another round of Mummy’s Braised Chicken on Friday. This dish is just perfect for busy days 🙂

New Year’s Eve & Happy 2014

Though I had a very turbulent time in 2013, I must say that the last few days of 2013 were one of my best for the year.  I’ve had innumerable depressing days contributed by the kids, online business and family matters but I’m glad that I managed to surmount them all and my head was above the water during these turbulent times.  Patience and acceptance of fact are the key to happiness.  Though many of the problems seem to be dormant and subdued now, I know that they will erupt again, without warning. But since I have handled them countless of times, I think I should be able to deal with them as and when they spew out again 😀

On New Year’s Eve, we checked into Best Western Dua Sentral Hotel with our gang of friends.  Upon check-in, the kids could not wait to join their friends to have some splashing good time in the pool.

After a dip in the pool and a shower, we went to Unique Seafood Restaurant to have dinner.

With good food, good wine and good friends around us, what more can we ask for on the last day of the year?

I love the grilled squids and that plate cost us a frigging RM80!  Abuden, but it was New Year’s Eve, so just whack only la and recover later, haha!

The total damage for this seafood dinner was about RM2,400 for 12 adults and 8 kids.

Unique 1

We ordered crabs cooked in 3 delish styles — spring onions and ginger, sweet and sour and salted duck’s eggs.  I like the duck’s eggs one the best and it’s the most fattening one too o_O   The surprising thing about this holiday is that though I had indulged in so much sinful grub and slackened in my exercise so badly, my weight remains unchanged!! 😀

Unique 2

After a scrumptious seafood dinner at Unique, we went back to the hotel to count down, with more wine.  From our room, we could watch fireworks display at the stroke of midnight from various spots.  For over 10 years, this same group of friends and us would count down and celebrate the New Year together.  Before we all had kids, we used to  celebrate in pubs and discos. Now that most of us have kids, we would count down at either our condo or at a hotel.

Countdown 1

After breakfast at the hotel on 1.1.2014, the kids headed for the pool again.  What’s the best thing about a holiday to the kids? The pool of course, and nothing else! They were not even hungry when they were in the pool, though it was way past their meal times.

Hubs and I were too lazy to get wet in the pool and shower again, so we got J, who is still a bachelor and with a girlfriend, to babysit Cass in the pool haha!  He passed with flying colors we told him 😀  While J entertained Cass and the kids played among themselves, we adults sipped coffee and juices by the pool.
Countdown 3

Awesome view of the KL skyline from the 6th floor of the hotel…

Countdown 0

And the hardest part about a holiday with this group of friends is to get the kids to get out from the pool!!  They seem to have selective hearing and no matter how many times we hollered “last 5 minutes kids”, no one seemed to have heard us!
Countdown 4

After checking out from the hotel, hubs brought us to China Town (Petaling Street) to hunt for street food. I almost wanted to strangle him for making me walk for almost an hour under the hot sun, looking for street food on a scorching hot sweltering day, aaargh!  Didn’t he even know that his wife is allergic to the sun meh?? Abuden, couldn’t strangle him nor complain too loudly, lest I appear like a spoilt brat in front of our friends muahahaha!

First stop was at this unassuming and dilapidated stall that sells pretty good chee cheong fun.  We had to sit on filthy chairs with sticky stained tables to eat. Some of us had to sit on an old wooden structure (as shown in below pic) to eat.  The stall is located opposite the famous Air Mata Kuching stall and a stall that sells Hello Kitty merchandise.  And our final stop was at  Nam Heong chicken rice — finally a place with air cond to cool me down!   The hubs had wanted to bring us for beef noodles but the stall was closed so we had to walk all the way back to where we were from under the HOT SUN!
Countdown 2
That was how we spent our New Year’s Eve and first day of 2014.  The kids enjoyed themselves to the max this school holidays. I am so glad that we are back to reality and back to the grind.    Holiday = money.  Oh yes, he also spent a few thousand bucks for the girls’ return-to-school fees and expenses as well as the usual monthly tuition fees and all that jazz in the first week of the new year.  Hubs needs to recoup all that was spent.  This year, hubs is planning for an overseas trip in November 2014!  I’ll see if this materializes…

Happy 2014 Peeps!

Hello everyone, it’s the second day of 2014 today!  Today is the first day of school for this year for my 3 girls.  There were no first day of school blues. No whining, no fussing, no dilly-dallying from anyone.  All 3 girls were raring to go back to school.  And I was so raring to get back my quiet and peaceful morning ME TIME, which I have been missing for 6 freaking long weeks!  And today is the first day that I started to jog at pre-dawn again, after a break of 6 weeks.  I have to admit that I have been slacking in my exercise regimen during the 6-week long school holidays to catch up on my beauty sleep before the battle of sleep deprivation begins again.  I am so glad that things are back to the grind again LOL!

I pray that this year will be a better year for me in every aspect of my life – from health to wealth to mental emotions.  Though there are too many negative news articles from the daily newspapers on price hike and  inflation, I am braving myself for the rough ride with a positive outlook *GASP*  We are already feeling the pinch with having to pay additional for Cass’ school fees, Alycia and Sherilyn’s transporter, increase in electricity bill effective this month and a price hike in everything that we buy now.

Here’s the little fashionista and my mum, taken at Tokyo Street @ Pavillion last Sunday.

Here’s wishing you a very peaceful and joyful  2014 🙂
