Baby C On Solids…. And Her Weight Dropped Further

I started Baby C on solids about a week ago. Her first ever taste of solids was some organic ground brown rice for babies that my sil bought from Hong Kong. I mixed it with some lotus root soup and she loved it.

Baby C smiling away after tasting her first spoonful of rice cereal as she was being carried by daddy.

However, after the most recent UTI attack and 3 days of antibiotics drips through IV line, her appetite reduced drastically. After the IV line was removed prematurely on Monday night and she had to be fed oral antibiotics (Zinnat), which made her puke each time she was forced fed with the meds, she now has a phobia of eating or drinking anything from a spoon or a syringe except my milkie which is direct from my boops! I was really devastated when the nurse weighed her yesterday and her weight had dropped 200gms…. to a mere 6.72kg!   She’s already slightly below average in weight and with the recent hospitalization, her weight plummeted further. I am just terribly worried. Hopefully she will regain her appetite, eat more and put on some weight very soon.

  1. HEY! I’m feeding my no.3 the same thing too! U want somemore? Let me know…..

Budden hor..I found that it caused my poor No3 to constipate. Sigh…so, I just switched to organic calrose rice. (I think they do sell this in KL) Now, he’s pooping much better!

So painful to hear about your Cassie being underweight. But guess what? So’s mine! Mine’s the 25th percentile..which is WAYYYYY below average. Just as long as she’s still drinking her milk…I think she’ll be alright. I know..you’ll still worry…just like me. Take care!

  2. Don’t worry shireen, sometimes babies go for months without putting on weight. my baby has been underweight for her first year and still is now – she’s only 10kg at 22 months! As long as baby is active and happy, sleeps well and eats, then it’s ok. They go through growth spurts, so maybe she’ll put on weight soon.

  3. Baby C still looks so chubby!! Coincidentally, my paed just scolded me yesterday by being so obsessed with what the weighting scale says. His advice was: why you worry so much? A baby isn’t going to starve him/herself. It is not how much they eat, but whether they are thriving in their own right. If they continue to be happy and are healthy, there is no need to worry. Some eat more, some eat less. So there you go!

  4. I fed my kids regular rice pablum(mixed with water!), and when a bit older I made congee with regular jasmine rice. Sometimes if there was chicken meat in it, I’d use a stick blender right in the pot to make everything mushy(yum!) and easier to eat.
I don’t believe in force-feeding either though it’s such an obsession with Asians esp. grandmothers! And it’s very true, kids will never starve themselves, altho as parents we just have to make sure they have access to healthy food choices.
