Into The Bin And Flushed Down The Toilet

This is Sherilyn’s dinner consisting of brown rice, pan-fried salmon fish, steamed egg with minced pork and stir-fried veggie, all cut up, along with a bowl of watercress soup. My mil normally prepares her bowl/plate of dinner, then feeds her *slap forehead*

This plate of dinner went into the bin coz after feeding Sherilyn just 1 spoonful, she stored the food in her mouth for almost an hour…. which really pissed my mil off and she sent Sherilyn off the dining table and told her not to eat anymore… and no milk for her later in the night. But that was music to Sher’s ears. She zoomed to the bathroom on the pretext of peeing and when we heard the sound of the toilet being flushed, we knew what this fler was up to…. coz she hardly flushes the toilet after her business. We saw bits of food and veggie floating in the toilet bowl haha…. she’s not quick enough to second flush to eliminate all traces of the food hah! See how cunning this fler is! Why lar Sherilyn is eating rice such a torture to you?

  1. aiyo, this is bad. just out of curiosity, does she snacks in btw lunch and dinner? if yes, maybe don’t allow her to?

i notice if i let my girl goes hungry in btw, she wld eat more during dinner time.

or u can try appeton? my hubby was a skinny baby and kid and hardly eats too. my mil used this and then, he has always been fat. 🙂

  2. maybe just give her something else.. since she likes noodle… resorting to have noodle with soup? maybe just have the pasta boiled and mix the the soup you guys have for dinner… no choice, since she is doing this to attract attention, and she wouldn’t afraid of the punishment any more.. be cool mummy… Cheer up.. I am sure Sher will understand one day..

  3. This is a battle of wills which unfortunately mummy cannot win. I myself have long surrendered this battle to my kids when they were 4-11 years old, when they had periods of not wanting to eat anything so called healthy-solid.

To force/threaten/punish her for not eating will only be counterproductive resulting in tears, stress for all. Important thing now is to get basic nutrition into her, never mind the healthfreak-mindedness – for now that is. Just getting her to eat anything other than snacks should be the goal.

If she likes noodles or macaroni, just let her have lah. After all, it’s just a different type of carbohydrate from rice. Else try mashed potatoes instead. Very easy – mash boiled potatoes with lil bit of butter, full cream milk. Add pumpkin if they likey, plus carrots or zuchinnis for some fun and color.

For protein, give whatever she likes, chix, or pork or fish, doesn’t matter. Main thing is to serve her what she will eat.

“Mah fun” to cook different set of meals for kids? Oh well, I much prefer a peaceful and happy meal consumed by the kid than tears and no food at all and oh, the terrible stress for everyone!

My kids hate rice. Oh well, who says we must have rice every single day? Compromise, and let them have what they will eat and be healthy rather than me burst a blood vessel. My kids eat rice 2 times a week – in the form of fried rice, which luckily everyone likes. One other day in the week, we have spaghetti bolognaise or fried noodles and salad which everyone likes too. The other 4 days, we adults have rice and 3 dis, soup, while they have macaroni-ham-cheese or mash potatoes mixed with pumpkin and/or carrot/broccolli with steamed corn and sausages or hamburger/pork patties or grilled salmon etc.

Mealtimes should be happy times. Be creative with your meal planning so they will find their food interesting and be eager rather than dreading mealtimes. Once a month we have rolly-pollies – vietnamese style rolls dipped in sweet sour sauce- stirfried beef strips n oyster sauce or crunchy fresh prawns/scallops/crabmeat etc with shredded carrots. This is much fun for everyone! We let the kids make their own rolls and eat it with their chubby fingers!

If they can have what they like, they win the battle. Yet if they eat all that we prepare with much love and thought for their preferences, we win the war! Everyone happy!

  4. Sze Mei… thanks for your lengthy experience / suggestions. It’s easy if I do the cooking myself but in my case, I stay with my mil and she is pro-rice…. night must eat rice….so quite difficult. Whenever she goes overseas, I serve Sherilyn bread/noodles every single day, so no headache for me.

  5. I doubt this is middle child syndrome. Maybe she feels she’s in control when she doesn’t eat, you know, liking the fact that the adults are asking/begging her, even threatening her to eat. Anyway, how abt just boil some noodles to go with the dishes… egg noodles, or meehoon or kueyteow.. or set a rule to her that on condition she gets her favourite twice a week (eg) she has to finish the other meals with rice.. This is nego process in training. I do that a lot with Vic, but not specifically this, just tempting her with her fav dessert or a kaikais session after dinner if she finishes quickly.

Anyway, Vic was like that, and take heart i’m sure they will grow up one day and eat on their own and appreciate all the good food you put on the table.

  6. i remember it was a torture for me to eat every meal when I was a kid up to age 7 i think. i’d sit at the table for hours and hours on end. now i love food too much, can’t stop eating it *LOL*

  7. Oh dear …. is that what I will be going through too in a couple of years time?? But the dish your MIL prepared for her is like so yummy ….. I think Angel will surely gobbled that up in no time comparing to the veggie porridge that she is taking normally. I kind of agree with what Irene says there though (the first 3 lines).

  8. Perhaps, its the brown rice which puts her off. Would it make a difference it you don’t mince the food and also serve her white rice instead. Brown rice is actually an acquired taste, I think.

  9. maybe she doesnt like the dishes. if my kids dont like the food, they will chew for very long and have to feed them to finish it.

  10. Oh dear…Shay is just like her..except flushing the food down the toilet bowl..she hasn’t learnt that yet..LOL!!! I also don’t give her milk when she doesn’t finish her rice but she just doesn’t care..hmmm.

  11. where did she get the idea of flushing down the toilet. Very smart, she must have thought, you’ll never know coz that’s exactly what i did when i was a kid. I hate food, rice, meat ,etc. Give me biscuits and fruits anytime. When my mom wasn’t looking, I’ll flush everything down the toilet, luckily it was a squat toilet so nothing floats up. Maybe Amber takes after me, she hates food and hardly ask for any, sometimes I feel like I’m those farmers force feeding the ducks for foei gras. Surprisingly, she finishes her meal at the childminders, on her own , albeit a bit slow – about an hour. Maybe at home, she’s just used to the attention, shouting and fussing over her just to eat. I am so so ready to give up feeding her after the 3rd spoon and make her a bottle of milk. When I get really frustrated, I remind myself she was just like me when I was a little girl.. *sigh*

  12. wow.. hey.. u sure her intestines are alright? it doesn’t sound right, that she’s not hungry. Snacking on junk food is different, that’s more like her liking sweet things. but..not eating her meals, is really..something not right with her insides.

Like u said, I think u should really try the psyllium husks, and ban processed food for a while, till her movements are regular.

    It’s really worrying.

  13. Mott… thanks for your concern. I think there’s no serious probs internally coz today when we brought her to eat Italian food, oh my, she get eat and eat those spaghetti and bread with huge chunks of butter! I’m convinced that she just hates rice, just like mummy! After pooping lots for the past 2 days, her appetite is better today.
