When Do You Start Feeding Your Baby Solids?

I am still undecided when to start feeding Baby C solids.  With Alycia, I started feeding her porridge at 6 months and Sherilyn, around 7-8 months.  I am thinking of delaying feeding Baby C solids until she’s at least 8 months or even longer.

Here are some excerpts from kellymom.com (an exclusive site for breastfeeding mums) on why babies should be fed solids at a later age :

 1. Most babies will become developmentally and physiologically ready to eat solids by 6-9 months of age. For some babies, delaying solids longer than six months can be a good thing; for example, some doctors may recommend delaying solids for 12 months if there is a family history of allergies.

2. The following organizations recommend that all babies be exclusively breastfed (no cereal, juice or any other foods) for the first 6 months of life (not the first 4-6 months):

-World Health Organization
-UNICEF
-US Department of Health & Human Services
-American Academy of Pediatrics
-American Academy of Family Physicians
-American Dietetic Association
-Australian National Health and Medical Research Council
-Royal Australian College of General Practitioners
-Health Canada

3. Reasons for delaying solids :
-Delaying solids gives baby greater protection from illness.
-Delaying solids gives baby’s digestive system time to mature.
-Delaying solids decreases the risk of food allergies.
-Delaying solids helps to protect baby from iron-deficiency anemia.
-Delaying solids helps to protect baby from future obesity.
-Delaying solids helps mom to maintain her milk supply.
-Delaying solids helps to space babies.
-Delaying solids makes starting solids easier.

My generous sil from Hong Kong bought 2 boxes of Organix baby cereal for Baby C :

This one the baby can start to eat between 4 – 6 months.

And this one, the baby can start to eat at 6 months.

I was really tempted to feed Baby C the first one but after reading the article from kelly.com, I think I will delay feeding Baby C  solids.  Well, hopefully I can still continue to breastfeed her exclusively for at least another half a year or even longer …. which means that I have to delay my diet plan.

When did you start your baby on solids?

On a sidenote, just want to share this pic with you :

  1. i think i started to feed mine at 4 months with puree sweet potato, i think. Cannot remember need to check my blog back. Very forgetful edi. haha

  2. I think it all depends on the baby. Each baby will ready at different time. Some require to start solid early when bm cannot satisfy his hunger anymore. My friend’s bb who is already 10months is still not on solid yet.

  3. wah..no.2 real samseng ah!!! HEHEHEHE…dun worry…mine also!

I just started no.3 on organic rice cereal… he’s been showing all the classic signs..plus, he’s 5+ months. So…best to start when they show interest? I started No.1 n 2, around the same time.

  4. With Kimberly, it was fruit puree once a week at 4 months till she reach 6 months old. With Ashley it was at 6 months. Read Kellymom’s site when Ashley was a newborn (2 1/2 years ago lar. haha, since Ashley is now 2 1/2 year old) and knew that that 4 months is no good. I think that site wasn’t up 8 years ago when Kimberly was a baby. Had I been aware back then, I wouldn’t have fed Kimberly solid till she was 6 months old either.

  5. I only start solid on Jona when he is 7 mths old…me no hurry one…..

btw, if that is the case, then, old ppl said, next pregnancy you will have baby boy….ha,ha..dare to try? 😛

  6. I think I started Ivan at about 8 months or so last time, Izac started late also… as long as they can get full for some time after a feed then I guess it’s ok. I think the reason for starting solids is if your child is hungry for more, even after milk time…

I breastfed Izac for 1 year (together with pumping at work), after which I stopped but still breastfeed him direct up till today (he’s 2 1/2 now!)… Now that I have given birth and milk is IN again, the boy is happily helping mei mei drink some BM :S This makes me scared to bf for too long, lest this girl also end up like Izac, dunno when he’ll self wean :S

  7. My DD turned 6 months yesterday and I’m still contemplating whether or not to feed her solids. I read about the benefits of starting solids later and wonder if that means there are “risks” to starting solids sooner (like the benefits of breastfeeding can be turned into risks of formula feeding). When put that way, I think I’ll wait a few more months. No hurry.
