The Great Chocolate Chip Heist

Besides butter and ice-creams, Cass also has a serious love affair with chocolate. She especially loves chocolate chips generously scattered on cakes and cookies. So it came as no surprise when I brought home a loaf of double chocolate cake topped with a layer of shiny, sugary chocolate chips, and she immediately asked, “Can I eat all the chocolate chips on top?”

Now, most people would nibble the cake slice as a whole. But Cass? No — she wants to strategically pick off every last chocolate chip like a squirrel storing treats for winter. While I find the chips a tad too sweet for my liking, her eyes sparkle at the sight of them.

I told her, “Ok, you can do it — but only at home and only with my permission.” I reminded her that doing this in public or when eating with others is a big no-no. It’s selfish, and honestly, a little gross. I mean, can you imagine serving someone a cake that’s had all its toppings picked off? It looks like it’s been scavenged by a hungry rat!

At 17, Cass is still full of quirky habits — and this one definitely tops the list. But I pick my battles. As long as she’s polite and mindful when she’s out and about, I’ll let her indulge in her chocolate chip obsession at home. (After all, teenage years are short — and quirks make memories!)

But tell me — would you let your teen eat all the toppings off a cake and leave the naked bottom behind? ?

Besides this quirk, she has another – she likes curry puffs, but only the ends, and I like the ends too. So who’ll eat the middle part? ?
