New Found Flash Cards

Cass was rummaging through my drawers  last week and guess what she fished out from the deepest end of the drawer that I hardly open? Boxes of flash cards on Math (division, addition, subtraction), words, opposites and nouns! They were all new and I was so pleasantly surprised with her unintentional discovery!  I inspected the flash cards and tried hard to trace back when I had bought them.   Moments later of trying to muse over the history of the new flash cards, I remembered that I had bought them 6 years ago, back in the early year of 2007, when Cass was not even formed yet!  Imagine the cards have been sitting nicely inside the deepest and darkest spot inside my bedroom drawer and had it not been Cass’ curiosity to dig inside the drawer, I think the flash cards would have to be given away later.  They ain’t cheap ok and I bought them when I was still very much a pro-flash cards full-time SAHM with a full-time maid and had so much time on hand to flash cards to Alycia and Sherilyn up to 3-5 times a day!  I even had the time to make my own flash cards and even made my own story books with pictures of Alycia and Sherilyn and a story to go with each picture to pique their interest in reading.

Anyway, the flash cards are still handy.  Since Sherilyn still faces confusion with the spelling of some nouns in plural like when to change ‘f’ to ‘ves’,  ‘y’ to ‘ies’, etc., I started to flash the cards to her with Cass observing and learning as well.  But the Math flash cards with simple additions are too easy even for 5-YO Cass.  I still do not have the heart to give them away as the cards are still so new and are very sentimental to my heart. Perhaps I will just do like what my mum likes to do, that is to keep them for my grand-children HAHA!

Flash Cards For 4-Year Olds

These are Cass’ BM flash cards from pre-school meant for 4-year olds.  From my experience with my 3 kids, I think flash cards will only be effective in teaching the child to read if the parent is involved actively too.  If the child is taught flash cards in school and then in go the flash cards into the bag without any practice at home,  the child would most likely not remember the words being taught. It is only through daily practice that the child will remember. Also, it also depends on the child’s willingness to sit still and look at the cards. Some kids will run away or have totally no interest when the cards are being flashed.

For Cass, if I practice reading with her everyday, she will be able to remember and recognize the words. I also need to have refresher sessions with her on the cards that she had already received a ‘chop’ from the principal. Cards that she gets a ‘chop’ are words that she had already mastered and recognizes. With Cass, she tends to forget the words after several days, so I need to read the ‘chopped’ cards to her again… IF I have the time la.

I am already teaching Cass sukukata now and I think it is very beneficial to her in picking up BM words. I normally let her watch some interesting videos in You Tube on sukukata and I will also teach her on my own with the flash cards.

Make Good Use Of Thy Time

I always wished there were more than 24 hours to a day so that I can do more for my gals, more for myself & DH and lastly get more SLEEP. I hate to see precious time being wasted, I don’t like me or my gals sitting around not doing anything purposeful. This perhaps, may be contributed by the fact that I once worked at 3 large organizations where time was of the essence and I was constantly put in a pressure-cooker, always rushing to meet deadlines for my bosses and always had to do multiple tasks at any one time. I rarely had the luxury to go out for long lunches with my colleagues and most of the time, I had my lunches behind my PC, one hand typing / checking e-mails and one hand biting a quick and easy-to-eat lunch.

I like to read to my gals when they are having their meals, drinking their milk or sitting on their potty doing their little poopy business. This is what I normally do with my gals to maximise our time :
