An Auntie’s Express CapCut Class

A few days ago, Alycia’s best friend, WY, came over for a visit. WY majored in broadcasting in university — what perfect timing! I had been wanting to learn the basics of video editing in CapCut for my new project, and Alycia had mentioned earlier that WY was really good at it.

This was my chance! The stars had aligned, offering me a real-life pro right in my living room.

I’ll be honest, I was still feeling a bit under the weather, recovering from a bout of flu (or was it Covid?). My original plan was an early night. But how could I let this golden opportunity slip away? Summoning my energy, I swallowed my “auntie” pride and asked WY if she could spare some time to teach me the basics of CapCut — and she kindly agreed.

What followed was an express crash course in video editing! In less than sixty minutes, WY managed to demystify the entire app for me on my desktop PC. This wasn’t just a tutorial; it was an express, hyper-efficient masterclass. If I had tried to learn this myself by watching YouTube videos, it would have taken me days, if not weeks or months, of frustration, pausing, and rewinding. I’d still be wondering how to import songs from YouTube into my videos.

Here’s what I walked away from my almost one-hour express course knowing:

The Mystery of the Graph-like Charts: You know those wavy lines at the bottom of the project (footage)? I finally learned they are for adjusting audio levels and keyframing visuals! It seems so basic now, but it was a total game-changer for me.

Voiceover Magic: I now know how to seamlessly record my voice directly over a video clip. WY taught me the shortcut method, which was pretty fast and easy.

The YouTube-to-MP3 Pipeline: WY showed me how to convert a YouTube music track into an MP3 file and import it safely into my project for a perfect soundtrack. She also had a shortcut method for it!

And So Much More: From trimming and splitting clips to adding simple text and transitions, she gave me the foundational toolkit I needed.

After the crash course ended, I quickly wrote down what WY had taught me and saved them on my PC, as well as Whatsapped them to myself.

This basic course is more than sufficient for me to start creating clean, simple videos for my project. The initial intimidation is gone, replaced with a budding confidence.

The best part? WY was incredibly patient with this ever-inquisitive auntie. And I’m thankful to report that this auntie’s mind is still lucid enough to grasp new concepts pretty quickly! It was a perfect student-teacher match.

I am so incredibly grateful to WY for her generosity and time. This calls for a proper thank you, so a treat to a delicious lunch is definitely in her very near future!
