Last week, Jaya Grocer ran one of its most anticipated promotions — fresh Norwegian salmon sold at reduced prices by the whole fish. These salmon sales happen a few times a year, and each time, it sparks a frenzy. Shoppers are willing to queue for hours just to bag these prized fish at a fraction of their usual price.
During the promotion, the supermarket staff scale, clean, and cut up the fish for customers, packing each piece neatly in vacuum-sealed plastic. Typically, a 4–5kg fish yields about 15–20 portions. But at the Pearl Point outlet, where Alycia happened to be shopping with her university mates, the supervisor had instructed staff to reduce plastic usage. So instead of the usual 15–20 pieces, we got 10 larger cuts, along with a pack of halved salmon head and another pack of salmon bones.
Alycia, who now stays with her uni mates at their rented apartment several times a week, went grocery shopping with them and brought home the salmon haul. They cook and dine together almost daily — a sweet little home-away-from-home routine.
So naturally, with 10 big vacuum packs of salmon, our menu this week has been pretty fishy — in a good way! I air-fried the salmon head and shared it with Sherilyn and Haru. Haru, our little ‘atas’ (high-class) fur baby, is a true connoisseur — she only eats salmon and saba, but turns her back on other types of fish that we cook.
I also air-fried a fillet or two for Cass, which she paired with veggies and a bit of Yong Chow fried rice. The girls and I love salmon, and we honestly wouldn’t mind having it several times a week. But of course, the price tag is usually the biggest deterrent (no thanks to the recent SST imposed on it). Then there’s the mercury concern, which we try not to think about too much when we’re enjoying our fishy feast.
All in all, it’s been a delicious week — filled with omega-3s, sizzling air-fried meals, and the satisfaction of scoring a great grocery deal. I’m already looking forward to the next salmon sale, provided one of the girls is willing to queue up for the fish! Alycia and her friends queued up for over an hour for the fish.

Half the head for Sherilyn and half for me and Haru.
