Home, Sweet Home, Then Off Again

After five long days in Singapore for the 27th Asia Pacific Dance Competition, Sherilyn finally returned home last night. The first thing she did was grab our cat, Haru, and collapse on the couch, where she promptly fell asleep. The hours of intense practice and the adrenaline of the competition—which her team won, bagging FIRST place in the Contemporary Dance category—had clearly taken their toll. I am incredibly proud of her and her team for all their hard work and dedication.

She slept soundly for nearly 12 hours, waking up only when I nudged her this morning. There was no time to waste: she had a 12 noon ETS train to catch to Ipoh! True to her nature, however, she dilly-dallied, completely cool as a cucumber with not a single ounce of panic. At 11:30 a.m., she was still at home, calmly applying makeup and getting ready. Thankfully, she made it to the train just in time and arrived safely in Ipoh with her university mate.

The girls are now happily settled at my parents’ house. My daughters love spending their semester breaks with their grandparents in Ipoh. As much as I wish I could join them, I can’t. My focus right now is on Cass, who is in the midst of her very important SPM exam season. Her trials are in two weeks, and the actual exams begin in early November, ending on December 23rd. My priority is to be here for her. But once her exams are over, I’ve promised myself a long break in Ipoh to make up for all the lost time with my parents.

Meanwhile, Alycia is just as busy, if not more so. She’s been preparing for an exhibition of her final semester’s projects at Sunway Pyramid. The setup for the exhibition was a late-night affair—or rather, a very early morning one. She and her course mates, along with their lecturers, were at the mall at 3 a.m. yesterday to set up their booth, as that was the only time slot the mall allocated. Alycia is in her final semester, which will end next month. After that, her social calendar is packed! She’s off to Bali with one group of friends in September and then to Busan, Korea with another group in November.

I must admit, I do envy her vibrant social life and overseas travels. It’s something I wish I had done more of when I was her age. But I’ve decided it’s not too late. I’m already making plans to embark on my own travels once Cass graduates from university—or maybe even sooner!
