Four Days of Bliss: Coming Home to Be a Daughter Again

The past four days in Ipoh, staying with my parents, have been nothing short of bliss. The kind of bliss that makes you quietly wish time would slow down… or better yet, stop altogether. Part of me really wants to stay here forever and just be pampered by my parents. And who knows — maybe one day soon, that wish will become a reality.

What has brought me the greatest sense of relief is not having to carry the mental load of an entire household. For once, I don’t have to worry about anyone’s meals, dirty laundry, or chauffeuring people around all day. Back in KL, I do at least six loads of laundry every single day. Here in Ipoh? My papa does the laundry. Yes — my papa.

Meals are lovingly taken care of too. My only “duties” are mopping the floor and helping out in the kitchen after meals — tasks that feel almost therapeutic compared to my usual routine. For the first time in a long while, I get to simply exist as a daughter again, not the default caretaker.

Of course, there’s a tiny “side effect” to all this love — I’ve already gained one kilogram since coming home on Wednesday 😅. My parents eat dinner at 8pm, which feels incredibly late to me. In KL, I don’t even eat dinner. My last meal is usually around 4–5pm, something light like plain yogurt with nuts and soaked chia seeds. But here, I join my parents for dinner — because food cooked with love is hard to resist.

I haven’t gone out to exercise since Wednesday either. It’s been raining every single day, so outdoor walks are out. That said, I’ve been walking up and down the stairs more than 20 times a day — enough to give me achy calves and a gentle reminder that movement comes in many forms.

With the way my parents have been feeding me — nourishing, comforting, and generous meals — I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if I gain another kilogram soon. And you know what? I’m learning to be okay with that. Weight comes and goes, but moments like these — being home, being cared for, being held in quiet love — are priceless.

Sometimes, coming home isn’t about going back to a place. It’s about returning to a version of yourself that feels safe, rested, and deeply loved. And for these past four days in Ipoh, that’s exactly what I’ve found.

My papa double boiled bird’s nest with ginseng and honey rock sugar for everyone.

    1. Hi Liv
Here’s my dad’s recipe for the ginseng chicken soup, do try it 🙂
      1. 1 chicken carcass
      2. Some lean pork
      3. A handful of ginseng
      4. Some red dates
      5. Some goji berries

Double boil all the ingredients for 5 hours in the slow cooker, then add in the ginseng and double boil for another 2 hours.
      Happy trying 😉
