Lately, I’ve been making a conscious effort to eat more mindfully — and I can truly feel the difference. I try not to buy food from typical chap fan (economy rice) stalls anymore. Not only do my daughters, especially Cass and Sherilyn, dislike those dishes — calling them oily, salty, sweet and just plain “blah” — but I also know deep down that those dishes aren’t doing my health any favors. They’re often cooked with cheap, reused oil, and the vegetables aren’t always cleaned as thoroughly as I’d like. Worse still, they aggravate my cholesterol and blood sugar levels.
So, we’ve been keeping things simple at home. Either we cook light, wholesome meals or buy roast chicken from local stalls — a much healthier option that’s not overly oily or cloying. Roast chicken tends to have minimal seasoning and feels less heavy, making it a better choice for both my taste buds and my body.
I’ve also developed a checklist of daily must-eats to nourish my body:
Fruits: orange, apple, kiwi, guava, papaya, plum, blueberry, lemon, dragon fruit, banana (it’s a herb though)
Vegetables: especially leafy greens
Seeds & Nuts: walnuts, hazelnuts, soaked chia seeds, ground flaxseeds, black sesame seeds, Brazil nuts.
Protein: Quality eggs and mostly chicken or fish, occasionally pork and beef
Dark chocolate: Yes, a little indulgence and that’s good for you! I love my 99.9% dark chocolate from Benns.
Fiber: ground flaxseeds and soaked chia seeds
Coffee: decaf instant coffee.
Superfoods: pumpkin, sweet potatoes, mushrooms, avocado, and raw greens
Calcium-rich foods: low-fat yogurt, Greek yogurt, milk, and nuts
Nourishing soups: Beacon chicken essence or homecooked soups
Daily matcha and green tea
And of course, my daily supplements
Even though I still enjoy the occasional snack, I opt for better-quality, healthier options. It’s not about being strict — it’s about balance, intention, and self-care. I genuinely feel better, more energetic, and lighter when I prioritize healthy foods over convenience

I managed to tick off almost every item on my must-eat list today, except for drinking soup.
My dinner today was steamed New Zealand Happy squash (pumpkin) and air-fried shimeji mushrooms with minced garlic and red onions. I also had roast chicken breast, an egg and chicken & prawn noodle soup (sans the noodles) with raw baby Romaine lettuce.
