A Sunday of Sourdough, Chap Fan, and Family Favourites

Today’s Sunday brunch was once again just hubby and me. With my mother-in-law feeling under the weather and staying home, Alycia busy at her course mate’s house working on an assignment, Sherilyn at her grand aunt’s unit working on her architecture project, and Cass, as usual, training at the skating rink, it was another rare couple’s outing.

Sherilyn has recently been making full use of her grand aunt’s apartment—just two floors below ours—to complete her assignments. With architecture projects that involve large sheets of paper, models and lots of cutting and pasting, she needs more space than her own desk allows. Since her grand aunt is still in England, she’s turned the empty unit into her quiet little studio.

Our Sunday food hunt started early. First stop—Universal Bakehouse in Damansara Kim. Known as a sanctuary for sourdough lovers, this bakery consistently draws long queues, and for good reason. Their sourdough bread, tartines, shokupan, and cakes are divine. We managed to grab a loaf of sourdough and a few sweet treats before everything was sold out—they’re usually wiped clean by noon!

Next up was Section 17, PJ, a true food haven. Hubby had called ahead to the legendary pork noodle stall at Wah Cheong kopitiam, just across Seventeen Mall, to place an order for three packets of their famous pork noodles. Even with the pre-order, the wait was about an hour—which we were fine with, as we had another place in mind for lunch.

While waiting, we wandered around and finally chose PJ72 Mixed Rice Restaurant for chap fan (economy rice). This chain restaurant is known for its clean and comfy (with air-cond) shop, a high-tech centralized kitchen that hygienically cleans the veggies and meats for all their outlets (almost 20 outlets in West Malaysia) and an astounding selection of almost 100 dishes. From leafy greens to meats in every style, it was hard to choose just a few! As we ate, we watched their video showcasing the meticulous preparation that goes into their dishes —very reassuring and impressive.

With full tummies, we collected the pork noodles, then walked over to Doux Doux for a much-needed caffeine fix and a slice of their delicious burnt cheesecake. Our last stop was at a well-loved chicken rice stall nearby, where we packed dinner home for everyone.

And that wraps up our Sunday—a day spent reconnecting over good food, indulging in PJ’s vibrant food scene, and taking a little time to rest, reset, and gear up for another hectic week ahead.
