While most people were enjoying a relaxing break today, my Labour Day felt anything but restful. Despite it being a public holiday, I was buried under some article submissions for my overseas client. On top of that, I had to take my mother-in-law to the pharmacy to get her medication — something I couldn’t put off.
To make matters more hectic, all three girls were bugging me non-stop. Alycia and Sherilyn needed me to make their university tuition payments, while Cass was after me to transfer payment to her figure skating coach. I’m the kind of person who prefers to get things done on my own timeline — I absolutely cannot stand being rushed or pestered by anyone, unless you’re my boss who pays me my paycheck. So you can imagine how foul my mood was from morning till evening?!
And then came the dreaded tri-annual ritual: increasing my bank transfer limit. Every time I go through this, there’s the annoying 12-hour cooling-off period imposed by the bank for security reasons, which means I can’t make big transfers instantly. Ugh.
That said, I did manage to tick off a few boxes. I’ve made the final university payment for Alycia — a major milestone after four long years! And Cass’s coach has been paid too. As for Sherilyn, she’ll be at university all day tomorrow, so I’ve planned to make her payment on Saturday. It’s going to be a huge five-figure sum — sigh.
At the end of the day, I’m exhausted. But this is what parenthood looks like sometimes — running the behind-the-scenes operations, keeping everything together while putting your own needs last. And public holidays have never been holidays for me ever since I became a mother to my human kids and fur kid. Here’s hoping tomorrow brings less chaos… and a little more peace.
