One of our go-to Chinese restaurants in Ipoh is Hakka Yin Signature Restaurant, conveniently located in our neighbourhood in Ipoh Garden East.
This restaurant offers an authentic taste of traditional Hakka cuisine, set in a nostalgic space filled with old-world Chinese décor and furniture. It truly feels like stepping back in time while enjoying comforting, home-style dishes. For us, being Hakka ourselves, dining here always feels a little extra special.
We’ve tried many items on their menu over the years, and some of our favourites include their yam abacus beads, braised duck with ginger and fermented black beans, claypot yellow wine chicken, Hakka noodles, and chicken curry. Dad especially loves their braised duck, while their yam abacus beads rank among the best I’ve tasted in both Ipoh and KL.
On our latest visit, I decided to try something new — their chicken curry with pillow bread — and it turned out to be an excellent choice. The curry was rich and aromatic, infused with warm spices like cinnamon and star anise. The pillow bread, soft and fluffy like a sponge, was perfect for soaking up every bit of that delicious curry. It’s definitely a dish I’d order again.
Mum went for the belacan minced pork rice, which came with minced pork stir-fried with belacan, cabbage, a fried egg, and even a slice of fried luncheon meat. Since she doesn’t take spicy food, the thoughtful manager kindly offered her some non-spicy minced meat (usually served with their Hakka noodles), along with a small portion of the belacan version for us to sample — a gesture we truly appreciated.
Whenever we can’t decide what to eat, Hakka Yin Signature is always a reliable choice that never disappoints. To end the meal, their tong sui is a must-try. The pak kor yee mai (barley bean curd with gingko) is thick, smooth, and not overly sweet, while the hoong tau sar (red bean dessert) has just the right consistency with plenty of well-cooked beans — comforting and satisfying without being cloying.
If you’re craving authentic Hakka flavours in a cosy, nostalgic setting, this is definitely a place worth visiting.
